Why notebooks are so cheap

Now I know why brand new laptop computers have become so cheap over the last couple of years.

And it's not due to any technological advancements. It's due to huge amount of software crapware which the major hardware vendors, and their partners, bundle on the machines before they ship them out.

I just spent around four hours purging a brand new Compaq notebook from all the preinstalled junk from Adobe, Cyberlink, Motorola, Norton, Microsoft and HP.

Trial software. Bloated software. Useless software.

I assume that third-party companies are obviously paying millions of dollars to have their software crapware installed on all these notebooks, thus effectively subsidising the cost to the consumer.

But how many ordinary folks have the knowledge and confidence to be able to clean up their own brand new computers? How many will want to invest the hours needed? I'd suggest it's probably the minority, which leaves most consumers with 2GB notebooks with dual core processors still putting up with ridiculously mediocre systems.

This little gem as a great place to start.
