The scams are getting dumber
Monday, 12 May 2008
Some knuckleheads from the other side of the world tried scamming me (along with a few million other people) a couple of weeks ago.
This one was yet another phishing attack, targeting everybody and hoping that some recipients of their email are St George Bank customers who might be even dumber than they are:
Dear Customer ,
This e-mail has been sent to you by St.George Online Banking Security Department to inform you that we were unable to verify your account information. This might be due to either of the following reasons:
- A recent change in your personal information. (eg: billing address, phone)
- Submitting incorrect information during bill payment process.
we request you to confirm and update your account information today by clicking here.
Important Notice: You are strictly advised to match your security information rightly to avoid service suspension.
Regards,
St.George Online Banking,
Security Department
Thanks for your co-operation.
While the customers of St George Bank (along with a few million other people) have been targeted before, this one is particularly dumb. Apart from the typical spelling and grammatical errors above, this is what the bogus page which steals your account details looks like (click the image for a larger view):

The “internet banking tip” in the lower right-hand corner of the page says:
We will never send you an email requesting your personal internet banking information or send you an email with a link to internet banking.
Now if you still enter your account details, I guess you deserve to get ripped off.
