Nobody cares about your stupid cat

Saturday, 24 February 2007

If you’re writing for an audience (as opposed to for yourself) Ronald Huereca at Weblog Tools Collection offers some tips on topics not to blog about:

  • My hourly diary.
  • Nobody cares about my stupid cat.
  • I’m too busy to blog. So what?
  • Nobody is commenting! Poor me.
  • I hate my future in-laws.

According to Ronald, this is just about the most worthless thing you could say, assuming you had an audience to begin with:

“I woke up this morning. My cat wouldn’t stop meowing. I put on some pants and went to the restroom. Felt better. I brushed my teeth. I need new toothpaste. Have to go to work. Nobody’s commenting on my blog. I wonder why? Will write more later. Bye.”

While the internet (in most countries) still offers freedom of expression, and any blogger can (and should be able to) write about anything they want to, the fundamental issue is still:

Who are you blogging for and why?

If you’re blogging for an audience then to a certain extent you should accommodate them. If you’re blogging just for yourself, then why bother publishing it for the whole world to endure?
