My professional values
Recently, and for the first time in my life, I was asked to compile a personal list of professional values. After around a week, here's what I came up with.
In terms of work preferences, I enjoy exploring things in depth and arriving at solutions to problems by experimenting. I'm interested in initiating and creating different ways to solve existing problems. I also prefer to be challenged with new and unexpected experiences and I adjust to change easily.
I like to assist others by identifying their needs and solving their concerns. I'm interested in working and collaborating with others and prefer to be involved in work that allows me to exert some strategic influence. I also relish organising my own activities and see myself as independent and self-directing.
From a personal perspective, and how I see myself in the work place, these are what I consider to be my most important professional goals:
- To work in an environment that lets me use my creativity to think up new ways to do things.
- To enjoy work where I can solve problems and decide how things should be done.
- To work on things that require attention to detail and accuracy.
- To challenge my intellectual capacities and work on projects that encourage me to learn new things.
- To enjoy the freedom to work to my own schedule.
- To continue to be motivated by work that will ultimately improve things in the world.
- To work in an environment that allows me to help other people, either individually or in small groups.
- To work in an environment where I get recognition for my achievements.
- To continue to be motivated by a personal sense of satisfaction, rather than money.
- To work on projects that absorb me, even if they take up my leisure time.
- To be motivated by work that allows me to manage myself, instead of other people.
- To work in an environment that lets me persuade or negotiate with others.
- To compete and put my skills and abilities against others.
- To involve myself in assignments where I can work autonomously, with little or no supervision.
- To be able to set and meet my own personal goals.
While some of these preferences and goals will be seen as strengths and some as weaknesses, in reality they are probably both, and any future clients or employers should be able to have a pretty good idea about how well I might fit into their organisation.
