How to download videos from Youtube
Monday, 19 February 2007
With our woeful broadband speeds here in the “lucky country“, no wonder lots of us see Youtube as only conceptually useful.
In practice, trying to play any video clip is an exercise in frustration and disappointment, which typically concludes with a user rapidly losing interest due to overly excessive buffering.
An alternative and a much better solution is to download the video to your computer and then simply play it with something like Media Player Classic, as often and whenever you like.
But how do you download the videos from Youtube?
Point your browser to DLTHIS, copy the video URL from Youtube into the DLTHIS URL textbox and click on the “download” button. DLTHIS will then generate a link where you can download the video directly to your hard disk. Make sure that your downloaded file has a “.flv” extension.
If you want an alternative player, perhaps try Wimpy instead.
Update: As of 16 September 2007, DLTHIS doesn’t seem to work any more, try KeepVid instead.
