Google maps Australia, finally.

Tuesday, 13 June 2006

Some fifteen months after it’s announcement, Google Maps have finally got Australia covered. The new version of the API makes it a snap to add a customised interactive image map, such as this one, to your website.

There’s even a mashup blog showcasing a huge collection of the stuff which is already available. Applications range from the practical to the frivolous, in such categories as:

  • Beer and wine
  • Business
  • City information
  • Crime
  • Demographics
  • Employment
  • Mobile & wireless
  • Real estate
  • Recreation & fitness
  • Transportation
  • Travel & tourism
  • Weather

For those webmasters who are still afraid of JavaScript, this tutorial from Exploration Age shows you how to create your own map in less than ten minutes.

Expect lots of small businesses suddenly showing you their geographical location on their own websites.
