Flash blocker

All advertising is annoying.

But Macromedia have upped the annoyance factor by a couple notches with their irritating technology which allows websites to get around popup-blockers and ad-blockers. Since most browsers don't have the ability to turn off Flash on an individual website basis, many commercial websites have now adopted it as a means of advertising their wares.

Flashblock is a Firefox/Mozilla extension that provides easy and free Flash blocking on a per-website basis so that you can selectively switch the bloody thing off for any websites that use it to further pollute our desktops with movement, changing colours and sometimes even pointless noise.

According to the authors:

Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.

Flashblock currently blocks the following content types:

  • Macromedia Flash
  • Macromedia Shockwave
  • Macromedia Authorware

Installation is simple, painless and well worth the effort. Of course, it will only work with Mozilla and Firefox browsers. If you're an Internet Explorer user, tough. It's yet another reason you should switch to a better browser.
