Email subject lines are important

Monday, 16 April 2007

It’s not that I’m the only person in the world who is busy. We’re all busy. But far too often, I get an email which struggles to get my attention due to the subject line being either a single short word, too ambiguous, irrelevant or simply missing.

While my email client does allow me to search the content of the thousands of saved emails (spanning multiple folders) the search results still only show the subject. Which means I have to open each and every email in the search results before I can tell if that’s the one I’m looking for.

Is it just my age catching up with me or does anyone else find impotent email subject lines vexatious?

The other thing that I find annoying is where the sender writes everything in the subject line and nothing in the body. Most email software will truncate the subject after some 50 characters, don't these people know that yet?
