Don’t mislead your customers

Monday, 6 October 2008

While using a misleading keyword phrase in your adwords campaign may get your website more traffic, it’s also very likely to backfire because your potential customers won’t buy from you when they find out you lied.

If you google for “mens boots”, for instance, you’re likely to see these sponsored links:

If you goto www.ezibuy.com.au/Mens-Footwear, which is the URL specified in the sponsored link, you just get redirected to the Ezibuy home page. Why is that? Could it be because the category “mens-footwear” doesn’t exist?

I think so.

If you then search for “mens boots” on the Ezibuy website search tool, you get told they have no boots.

So, not only do they not have “mens boots” but they also don’t have “mens footwear”. According to the Wikipedia entry on adwords:

“As of April 2008 Google AdWords no longer allows for the display URL to deviate from that of the destination URL.”

Oops, there goes your market credibility and your brand reputation.
