Why you don’t want that new web project

Monday, 15 December 2008

Zeldman offers some humourous, yet frighteningly real, signs you don’t want that new web project.

Once I had a good laugh, I realised that I’ve actually encountered #3, #7, #9, #17 and #20 on more than one occasion.

Why bother with development frameworks?

Monday, 3 November 2008

Having worked with a couple of web application frameworks over the last couple of years, I got thinking.

Why is it that almost all the largest, busiest and most successful websites weren’t developed with a framework? Why didn’t the developers of Wikipedia, Facebook or Wordpress choose to use Symfony, Codeigniter, Mojavi or any of the other frameworks which claim to be the best?

Is it something to do with the reality that they’re often too complicated to learn in the first place? And even when they’re put to actual use on real websites, even the best ones are so bloated, that they simply crawl along at a snail’s pace?

Westpac’s website woes continue

Saturday, 8 September 2007

The SMH Blog reports on Westpac’s continuing problems:

“Thousands of Westpac customers went without their internet banking and online broking services for most of yesterday following a website glitch which, as of this morning, has still not been completely fixed.”

Q: Is this the same bank known for its crippled pages and worst website presentation?
A: Yes.

Q: Is this the same bank which has done a major visual “makeover” but then forgot to fix their usability and accessibility flaws?
A: Yes.

Q: If you put lipstick on a pig, is it still a pig?
A: Yes.

My second candidate for the web monkeys of the year award.
